Do I need to activate my phone to use it abroad?

You won’t need to do anything to your phone or device to make calls or texts abroad. We’ll automatically connect you to the best available network when you reach your destination. If this doesn’t happen, go to your phone’s settings and select Mobile Network Settings to search for and connect to a provider of your choice.

Depending on your phone, data roaming may or may not be turned on as a default setting. So, if data roaming is turned off, or if you’ve previously turned it off, you’ll need to switch it on to use data abroad. Our device guides will show you how to do this.

If we’ve told you there is a bar in place on your account preventing you from using your phone abroad you can switch this bar ‘off’ in My Vodafone.

If you’re taking a work device overseas, it’s worth checking if your company has put a roaming bar on it. If this is the case, ask your administrator if they can remove it for you.
