What do I need to do before travelling abroad?

If you’re a Pay monthly customer:

Check to see what you’ll be charged when roaming in your chosen destination. You can use your UK allowances in our Roam-free destinations at no extra cost, and for just £6 a day in our Roam-further destinations, on those days you use your device. Please note, you won’t be charged for receiving calls or texts.

If you’re roaming anywhere else, you’ll simply pay our standard roaming rates

Please note: roaming is unavailable on all Vodafone Basics SIM only plans as standard.

If you’re a Pay as you go customer:

There’s no extra charge to use any UK data, minutes or texts from your Big Value Bundles, Extras or Freebies if you’re roaming in our Europe Zone on Pay as you go. If you don’t have any of those products, you’ll pay your standard UK rates

If you’re roaming anywhere else, you’ll simply pay our standard roaming rates. For more information on our roaming rates and which destinations are in our Europe Zone for Pay as you go, visit our Travelling Abroad  page

Quick checks to make before you travel - for all customers:

  • If you’d like to send emails, use apps or access the internet, make sure data roaming is enabled on your phone
  • If you want to use your voicemail when you’re roaming you’ll need to have set up a voicemail PIN
  • Make a note of our Lost and Stolen 24-hour helpline, +44 7836 191 191. It’s free to call from any Vodafone mobile, even when you’re abroad – charges will vary on other networks

Your phone will automatically connect to a network at your destination. If you’d like to use your device to access the internet, send and receive emails, or use any apps which require data, ensure you have data roaming switched on. Our device guides will show you how to do this.

Note: many apps consume data in the background, even when you’re not actively using them, so if data roaming is turned on, you’ll almost certainly be using data.

Does my data cap apply when I have Vodafone Global Roaming?

Yes, if you’ve activated a data cap in the UK, it also applies in our Roam-free and Roam-further destinations. The data cap is switched off as standard, so you’ll need to switch it on to avoid exceeding your UK allowance when using any data services, such as browsing, streaming or using apps. You can enable or disable your data cap in the My Vodafone app or by logging into My Vodafone online. Please note: you’ll be able to switch on this cap if you upgraded or joined Vodafone after 5 May 2016.  If you bought your plan before this time, we’ll still let you know when you’ve reached 80% and 100% of your allowance.

If you’re roaming outside of our Roam-free or Roam-further destinations, your data usage is capped automatically at £39.33 (€50.00 ) and you’ll need to turn off your roaming data cap to continue using data once you’ve reached your allowance. Standard roaming rates will apply.
